Additional Director General of Police Abhyanand, whose Super 30 institute provides free coaching to students from the lower economic group at the district level, has now taken his experiment to sports. And his efforts have proved successful this time too, with 45 boys, aged between 14 and 19,representing Bihar at the national level within a span of 20 months. Most of these young sportspersons are sons of constables and petty workers, including sweepers.

The Bihar Military Police (BMP),which the ADGP heads,is supposed to coach only state police teams in various sports, but Abhyanand decided to also train the children of constables. Some children have come all the way from Jamui,Kaimur and Chhapra to train under the BMP.

Take the case of Chandan, son of a petty worker at Jamui. He has won two silver medals while representing East Zone in athletics and is in contention for selection in the national team. Chandan has been staying at the BMP barrack here.

Deepak Kumar, son of Head Constable Girijanand, has so far represented Bihar four times.

“After I joined the BMP in April 2008,I used to see a number of children loitering around the BMP ground. I thought of coaching them,” says Abhyanand, adding that the exercise needed no government expenses, just extending human resource (coaching) support to children, mostly sons of constables, sweepers and office attendants. The ADGP engaged gold medallist athlete Premchand Singh to spot talent among these children. After letters were sent to all BMP commandants,250 boys below 18 years of age turned up for the first test. Finally,136 boys joined the programme.

A beaming Premchand says: “Forty-five boys have done us proud by playing at the national level.” Bihar hockey team has 20 players coached by the BMP. State athletics team has 12 boys, state basketball and handball teams have five and six boys, respectively from the ADGP’s talent pool. Two of his boys are part of the boxing team.

“We have trained the boys, now it is up to parents, sponsors and the government to nurture them,” says the ADGP.
