The police on Tuesday arrested a warden of the Pranveer Singh Academy of Technology (PSAT) after a student attempted to commit suicide on Monday night due to alleged ragging.
A case has been filed for attempt to murder and for violation of the Prohibition of Ragging in Educational Institute Act.
Vishal Kumar Yadav, who had consumed mosquito repellent,is now out of danger and currently undergoing treatment in hospital.
Warden R N Nigam was arrested because Vishal alleged he (the warden) was often seen with the students who harassed him. He said since he had joined the college a few days ago,he did not know the names of these students.
The case against Nigam and unnamed students was registered on a complaint by Vishal’s father Hari Shankar Yadav. The district administration also served a show-cause notice to the college authorities, asking them to explain within a week their failure to check ragging.
This is the second such incident in the institute in a week.
On August 29,an ill student,Rajanshu Singh, was allegedly subjected to severe ragging. The student, who was hospitalised in a semi-conscious state, alleged his seniors even fired at him.
The college authorities denied both ragging incidents and claimed these were attempts to tarnish the reputation of the institute.
Chairman Pranveer Singh said Vishal never complained to the college authorities about ragging. He claimed Vishal consumed mosquito repellent after an argument with his father on Monday afternoon. “His father called up the warden and informed that his son had attempted suicide and the staff rushed him to hospital,” he added.
Pranveer said Vishal wanted to study as a day scholar but his father wanted him to stay in hostel. “It was only after his parents reached Kanpur that the issue of ragging was raised,” he said.
A resident of Raath in Hamirpur district,Yadav got admission in B Tech (computer science) course on August 23 and started attending classes from August 28.
Yaav alleged his seniors would often stop him,ask for his introduction and use abusive language. He said he was forced to smoke, drink liquor and was also beaten up. “When things went out of control,I informed my parents and consumed mosquito repellent to end my life,” he said.
Shailendra Kumar Singh,ADM (City),a show-cause notice was issued to the institute authorities since it was a serious issue.
