Staff suggestions help Maruti cut costs,save Rs 354 crore in FY’13

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSI),which was faced with damages to 17 per cent of its windshields during transportation till the start of the last financial year,has now seen it fall down to less than 1 per cent after it implemented an employee suggestion on better packaging of windshield glass consignments.

This is among the 396,000 suggestions the country’s largest auto maker implemented in FY’13 to cut down on miscellaneous expenses. In the first quarter of the current financial year,75,000 such suggestions have been implemented.

“We saved Rs 354 crore in costs during the last fiscal simply because of the implementation cost saving suggestions given by our employees. I would like to thank our employees for such suggestions and would also like to say that this proves their commitment towards the company,” said MSI chairman RC Bhargava.

Any employee can put in suggestion through three platforms: quality circles – a group of workers who meet to discuss various initiatives,filled-in forms with suggestions,and at Kaizen (Japanese for continuous improvement) meetings.

“We receive a large number of suggestions,but maintain a record of the ones that we accepted and implemented,” said Mayank Pareek,COO (marketing and sales).

The suggestions mainly relate to improving quality and reduce costs,ways to speed up operations,improve efficiencies and streamline supplies. Some suggestions have even helped to improve efficiencies of the robots used on the shop floor.
