A day after athlete Arunima alias Sonu Sinha was shifted to the AIIMS trauma centre from Lucknow,the doctors treating her said that three new spinal fractures have been detected in a CT-scan image. Dr Vijay Sharma,an associate professor in orthopedics who is leading the multi-disciplinary team treating Sonu,said that she had fractures in all the three vertebrae in her spine.
These spinal injuries were not detected earlier as doctors in Lucknow had focussed on giving her basic life-saving treatment,and they have done a commendable job. Thankfully,Sonus spinal fractures can be managed by bed rest of around six weeks. She will not need surgery, said Dr Sharma. He added that Sonu had also suffered a pelvic fracture,which would be managed by bed rest.
We have opened the stump on her amputated left leg,and slightly shortened it to reshape the amputation. We have removed all the dead tissue,and the minimal infection that she had developed has been treated, he said.
According to Dr Sharma, Sonu asked him if she would be able to play again. The first thing she asked me was if she would be able to perform on the sports field again. She is a very strong girl and we expect full recovery for her, said Dr Sharma.
Sonu,who lost a leg after being pushed out of a train, has been admitted in an isolated room in the disaster ward. Her mother has arrived here today. Sonus sister and brother-in-law accompanied her from Lucknow.
Doctors said that Sonu will have to stay in the hospital for a couple of weeks. According to Dr M C Misra,the chief of AIIMS trauma centre,We can administer the prosthesis only three-four months after her stump has healed completely.
