Shoot-at-sight order in Assam dist

With arson and violence continuing unabated in Assams Karbi Anglong district despite a flag march by the Army in Diphu and other adjoining areas,the state home department on Friday night issued shoot-at-sight orders. Diphu,the district headquarter town,has been under indefinite curfew since Wednesday.

Karbi Anglong district deputy commissioner PK Buragohain said the home department has issued the orders in view of repeated acts of sabotage on the Guwahati-Dibrugarh railway track in the past few days. The district has been witnessing large-scale arson and other acts of violence in the past three days over a demand for creation of a separate state out of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao the two hill districts of the state.

Protesters damaged 300 metres of railway track between Diphu and Nailalung stations,bringing train movement to a halt between Guwahati and the upper Assam towns of Jorhat,Tinsukia and Dibrugarh.

Meanwhile,the police opened fire in order to disperse violent mobs that were allegedly setting government offices on fire in Donkamokam. Four persons were injured in the firing and over a dozen policemen were also injured in clashes with the mob.

Normal life was thrown out of gear in several other districts across Assam as well on Friday. A 12-hour peaceful rail blockade called by the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) caused the stalling of the movement of railway traffic between the Northeast and the rest of India from 5 am to 5 pm.

A 36-hour bandh by the All Koch-Rajbangshi Students Union (AKRSU) demanding a separate Kamatapur state,disrupted life in several western Assam districts,with bandh supporters also attacking vehicles and setting them on fire.
