Sholay is 35 years old

It was Amjad Khan as the ferocious dacoit leader Gabbar Singh, who captured the country’s imagination.

Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay, the cult Bollywood film, turned 35 on August 15. It was on Independence Day in 1975 when Sippy’s third film after Andaz and Seeta Aur Geeta opened to a mixed response before it picked up by word of mouth. The rest,as they say,is history. The cast included Dharmendra and Hema Malini (Veeru and Basanti),Sanjeev Kumar (Thakur) and Amitabh Bachchan (Jai),but though they all put up a stellar performance,it was Amjad Khan as the ferocious dacoit leader Gabbar Singh, who captured the country’s imagination. Salim-Javed wrote the film with music by R.D.Burman.
