Shinde says NIA to probe Liyaqat arrest,Delhi Police are ‘not aware’

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah questioned in the assembly the veracity of Delhi Police claim.

Even as union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been asked to probe the arrest of alleged militant Syed Liyaqat Ali Shah, the Delhi Police said on Monday they were “not aware” of such a move.

The home ministry said some “doubts” had emerged in the Delhi Police’s report which were being examined independently. NIA director general S C Sinha said,“There is no case with NIA.”

Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar, who met union home secretary R K Singh, said: “I am not aware whether the probe is being handed over to NIA. It was purely a Delhi Police operation and we stand by our investigations.” The Delhi Police have claimed Shah was planning to carry out attacks in the capital.

Meanwhile,Chief Minister Omar Abdullah questioned in the Jammu & Kashmir assembly the veracity of Delhi Police’s claim that Shah is a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist.

“I am hearing for the first time that a militant came to attack a shopping mall, holding the hands of his wife and his daughter,as if they were entering India on a picnic,’’ Omar said. “When militants come, they have guns in one hand and grenades in the other,’’ he added.

Shah’s family members have claimed that he was arrested on the Nepal border, while he was on his way from PoK to the Valley as part of the J&K government’s rehabilitation policy for surrendered militants.

Demanding a time-bound NIA probe,Omar said: “If any wrong was done, many others who want to return home under this rehabilitation policy will step back.
