The Supreme Court Tuesday ordered a CBI investigation into a clash between lawyers, police and mediapersons in a Bangalore court complex last year during production of mining baron G Janardhana Reddy.
Setting aside a Karnataka High Court order on constituting a special investigation team (SIT),a Bench led by Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam directed the CBI to investigate the case and submit a report before an appropriate court in Bangalore within six months.
Considering the series of unfortunate incidents which occurred within the city civil court complex…and in spite of the specific direction by the High Court as early as on May 16,2012,subsequent order of this court dated October 19,2012,and also of the fact that composition of SIT itself has not been finalised,we feel that the present case falls within the principles enunciated by the Constitution Bench and we are satisfied that CBI inquiry is necessitated in the matter in issue, said the Bench. It asked the SIT to immediately hand over all the records pertaining to the probe to the CBI.
On March 2,2012,a scuffle had broken out between lawyers, police and mediapersons in a Bangalore civil court complex premises when Reddy,a former minister in Karnataka, was to be produced before a court in connection with an illegal mining case. The advocates had targeted journalists, particularly electronic media crew, who had gathered to cover Reddys appearance before the court. Over 191 cases were registered in connection with the incident against police, advocates, mediapersons and others.
