If it was Slumdog Millionaires moment of glory at the 81st Academy Awards this year, then it seems Asia, more particularly,India, was quite the flavour of fashionistas on the red carpet. What else would explain Freida Pinto wearing a blue John Galliano saree-inspired gown with exquisite net detailing,or Tina Fey hosting the show in a silver gown, whose drapes took off from the Indian garment?
While no one can fault a black dress on the red carpet, its become a tad bit passe now. Its the asymmetrical saree-inspired gown that everybody from Dior to Valentino to Gaultier have been doing with such finesse, which is the look to go for, says Delhi designer Ranna Gill.
From Nicole Kidmans sparkly white gown with feathers sprouting from the bosom and hem to Reese Witherspoons blue and black gown with asymmetrical straps and confused blocks of colour on the bodice, the looks were mostly inspired by the traditional Indian archetype. Back in India, designers like Gill,Gaurav Gupta,Tarun Tahiliani too have worked on the look. The idea is to make the saree look like a dress with the skirt really close fitted around the waist and the hips and then flared at the bottom with asymmetrical straps or shoulder drapes, says designer Vineet Bahl. Pitch for jewel tones like sapphire blue, emerald green, lemon yellow, add some matching jewels, and you are all set for your big night out!
