Saif is 10th Nawab of Pataudi

The 41-year-old actor was tied a white turban during Rasam Pagdi (coronation ceremony) in the presence of representatives of 52 villages of the Pataudi riyasat.

Actor Saif Ali Khan was on Monday annointed the tenth Nawab of Pataudi at his ancestral palace in Pataudi over a month after his father,Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, passed away.

The 41-year-old actor was tied a white turban during Rasam Pagdi (coronation ceremony) in the presence of representatives of 52 villages of the Pataudi riyasat. Saif’s mother Sharmila Tagore, sisters Saba and Soha and aunt Begum Sher Ali Khan were also present.

While titles like Nawab are no longer recognised by the Indian government as princely states were abolished in 1971,Mansoor Ali Khan was the last Nawab of Pataudi who reigned from 1952 till 1971.

However,Sri Pal,one of the sarpanches, said a panchayat of all the 52 villages was held recently where it was unanimously decided to anoint Saif as the 10th Nawab. “We are honoured to have known ‘Bade Nawab sahab’,who was close to us and took care of us. Saif, too, means the same to us. We have made him Nawab for purely sentimental reasons and out of respect,” said Pal.

Saif will now manage his father’s estate, ancestral home and trust. He will also look after the eye hospital and other charitable institutions his father managed.

“My family has been in grief due to the untimely death of Sarkar Abba (his father). The people of Pataudi have also been in shock due to his death. My father made this place famous in the entire world because of his love for the place and his people,” said the actor.
