In the light of the Supreme Courts observations on CBI sharing its status report with the Centre, the CPM Tuesday said continuation of Ashwani Kumar as the Law Minister has become untenable and demanded his resignation.

The CPM has so far refrained from seeking resignations of either Kumar or the Prime Minister, merely demanding that they explain their position to Parliament. Changing its stance, the CPM said the SCs observations are an indictment of the government. The Law Ministers continuance has now become completely untenable. He must resign or be removed forthwith, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said.

He suggested that the CBI should have an independent panel of lawyers. He said law officers are essentially political appointees of the government and wondered how can political appointees represent the CBI. There is a contradiction there, he added.
