Resolution of DTAA soon,say India,Mauritius

President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said India was keen to address the issue of Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and that the Joint Working Group (JWG) on the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention

President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said India was keen to address the issue of Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and that the Joint Working Group (JWG) on the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention (DTAC) has met twice in the last one year and India was looking forward to its next meeting in New Delhi.

He was speaking here soon after India and Mauritius signed a memoranda of understanding (MoU) in the areas of Health and Medicine,Tourism and Cooperation and in the field of Senior Citizens and Persons with Disabilities.

Mukherjee is on a three-day visit to the country.

In his media address Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam assured of a solution to the DTAA and said,“There is going to be a meeting in April. We have already managed to find common ground.”

Mukherjee told reporters,“They (the JWG) have provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss all issues with the aim of finding a mutually acceptable and beneficial outcome…. We also look forward to the holding of the 11th India-Mauritius Joint Commission Meeting.”

Earlier,in an interview to Mauritian French daily Le Matinal,published on Monday,Mukherjee said that the “JWG meetings so far had provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss the means forward to a mutually acceptable and beneficial outcome… a win-win situation for both. The DTAC cannot be seen in isolation… Our continued efforts should remain focused on realisation of the full potential of our relationship”.

The President said India had been the largest exporter of goods and services to Mauritius since 2007. Mukherjee said that in FY12,“India exported goods worth $1.4 billion to Mauritius and imported goods worth $39.13 million,which indicated that India has now become Mauritius’s largest trading partner.” He also said Indian overseas investments to Africa are beginning to be channelled via Mauritius.
