Ramdev gives govt 3 days to meet his 3 demands

Ramlila Maidan stir: Wants Lokpal Bill passed in Monsoon session; black money brought back; independent selection of CEC,CBI chief,CAG,CVC

Fourteen months after his ignominious exit from Ramlila Maidan in a salwar kameez,Ramdev returned to the ground to take over the Lokpal agenda and threaten revolution should his three demands not be met by Sunday.

For the greater part of the day,the stage remained a mass of saffron with leaders of various akharas from Hardwar and Varanasi holding court. By evening,he was joined by representatives from Art of Living whose founder Sri Sri Ravishankar issued a statement of support from Assam, making him the first from India Against Corruption to pledge support for the agitation that was originally meant for bringing back black money stashed abroad. Both Ramdev and Ravishankar are founder members of IAC whose existence is now questioned after the decision of Arvind Kejriwal and company to launch a political party.

An incipient tenor of superiority visavis Anna Hazare’s movement against corruption was apparent throughout Ramdev’s speech. He repeatedly claimed that he had no political agenda. Announcing his decision to go without food for three days,he asserted: “This is neither an indefinite fast nor a fast unto death” — clearly sarcastic references to Team Anna’s fast unto death that failed to deliver.

Ramdev specifically said he was with Anna Hazare in the latter’s “social agenda”. He also said his movement was not against any political party and was willing to talk to anybody, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

IAC’s now apparently abandoned agenda of a Lokpal Bill was the focus of Ramdev’s morning address and in what looked like a calculated move to steal Team Anna’s thunder he said there was no “room for ego hassles in something this important and even the much maligned ‘government’ Lokpal Bill would do. We will make do with a 99% Lokpal but bring it in the monsoon session of Parliament”. The other two demands are to make the appointments of chief election commissioner,CBI director, comptroller and auditor general of India and the central vigilance commissioner independent of the government and his original agenda of bringing back black money.

With a crowd of more than 20,000 in attendance, the yoga teacher who has now decided to devote himself to “nation building” said: “If they do not understand the language of non-violence,there will be revolution. That is why I started this agitation after visiting Rajghat and Shahidi Park.”
