Noted industrialist Rama Prasad Goenka,83,passed away Sunday morning from prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife,sons Harsh Vardhan Goenka and Sanjiv Goenka,and daugther Yashodhara Khaitan.
He was the chairman emeritus RPG Enterprises and the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group and was also the chairman of CESC,Ceat and Saregama India.
Goenka joined his family business,after graduating from Presidency College,Kolkata. He later established RPG Enterprises in 1979 with Philips Carbon Black,Asian Cables,Agarpara Jute and Murphy India following a division of assets among his three brothers.
Goenka was known as the takeover specialist and in the 1980s acquired several companies including Ceat Tyres,KEC International,Searle India (now RPG Life Sciences),Dunlop,Gramophone India,expanding the groups footprint across tyre,carbon black,pharmaceuticals,IT,transmission,power generation,music,and other businesses.
A former member of the Rajya Sabha,Goenka was president of the Ficci.
Ficci president Naina Lal Kidwai said,Shri Goenka through his relentless work helped strengthen industrys recognition in the global economy. CII president S Gopalakrishnan said,One of the tallest business leaders has passed away from our midst and the country has lost one of its business doyens.
