Rabbi Shergill nephew found dead

On way to Punjabi University, had gone missing on May 4; naked body found floating in Bhakra canal

Singer Rabbi Sher-gill’s nephew Chetan (22) was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Haryana’s Sirsa district. Chetan,a student of Punjabi University,Patiala, was reportedly missing since May 4. A naked body was found floating in Bhakra canal on May 10 and the body was identified as Chetan’s on Sunday.

According to Chetan’s family,he boarded a bus from Delhi to reach Punjabi University. He was supposed to write his exam of MAJMC on May 4. Preliminary investigation conducted by Haryana and Punjab police revealed that Chetan was supposed to get off at a bus stop near the university. “But he left his bag in one bus, boarded a wrong bus and reached Sadduwal village,Patiala. When the conductor asked for his ticket,Chetan realised that he had left his bag in the other bus. Chetan used his mobile phone to call his mother, who talked to the conductor and requested that he should not be charged for the ticket. The bus was stopped and Chetan got off. The driver and conductor have been questioned,” said a Punjab Police officer.

Said Ashu Malik, who runs a network of divers in Punjab and Haryana,“After getting off the bus,Chetan again called his mother informing her that he had missed the exam and asking her to take him back from there. The phone got disconnected and despite repeated attempts, his mother could not reach him. One of the teachers in the university, who is related to Chetan’s mother, approached me. The Patiala police also contacted me. My divers found a mobile phone and spotted a few clothes on the bank of Bhakra canal in Saddowal. I contacted Patiala SSP H S Mann and handed over the phone to him. We suspected that Chetan might have jumped into the canal and committed suicide. On May 11,I managed to recover the body from Bhakra canal and informed the Haryana Police. Chetan’s mother identified him.”
