PM to keep a tab on 19 programmes

In order to instill a renewed sense of purpose within the government,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will personally monitor the progress and execution of a dozen-and-a-half key programmes every month

In order to instill a renewed sense of purpose within the government,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will personally monitor the progress and execution of a dozen-and-a-half key programmes every month, including the politically-volatile Lokpal Bill,Grievance Redressal Bill and Judicial Accountability Bill.

After a mid-term review of the government programmes, the Prime Ministers Office has identified 19 important areas which it wants to monitor on a monthly basis. These areas will form the core of UPAs governance agenda in the near future.

Sources said the PMO had devised a mechanism to monitor these programmes and set specific dates and timelines by which assessments will be made every month. All the ministries concerned have been requested to give an update on the programmes under their control by the 5th of every month through an online system. A consolidated monthly report on all these programmes will be submitted to the the Prime Minister by the 12th of every month.

Apart from the anti-corruption measures that are the flavour of the season, the thrust areas identified by the PMO for monthly monitoring include a host of other politically-sensitive areas like the proposed laws on land acquisition and public procurement. Prime Ministers announcements for Jammu and Kashmir and the north-east would also be followed-up for their implementation and so will be the recommendations of the 2nd Administrative Reforms Commission.

Other thrust areas include the Sachar Committee recommendations, implementation of the eight Missions formed under the National Action Plan on Climate Change, creation and management of cold chain storage facilities and progress of the National Highway Development Programme.

Sources said Principal Secretary to PM Pulok Chatterji will brief the Prime Minister every month on progress in these thrust areas.
