The Supreme Court on Monday issued fresh notices to the central government and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on a PIL that seeks to prohibit doctors across the country from going on strike.
A Bench led by Justice S S Nijjar asked the government and the IMA to file their response within two weeks.
The court, which on the last date had found favour with an argument by the petitioner that any strike by doctors puts patients in severe difficulties, also made it clear that if the IMA failed to show up in court through a counsel, the court will still hear the matter and pass appropriate orders.
The petitioner,NGO People for Better Treatment, had moved the court in June to stay the day-long nationwide strike called by the Indian Medical Association in protest against certain reforms initiated by the central government in the medical field.
While the Supreme Court refrained from passing a restraint order against the impending strike after considering it was too late to expect compliance of any interim order,it had expected that the doctors would not resort to this mode of agitation in the interest of patients.
