Only Srikrishna report on meet agenda, says Chidambaram

Seeking to allay apprehensions of political parties that the January 6 meeting on Telangana may throw up contradictory views

Seeking to allay apprehensions of political parties that the January 6 meeting on Telangana may throw up contradictory views,Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that only the recommendations of the Srikrishna Committee report would be discussed in the meeting.

In a letter to CPI’s state secretary K Narayana,Chidambaram wrote that the purpose of the meeting was to share the report with the eight recognised political parties. “You will recall that the Justice Srikrishna committee was appointed following the meeting of the eight recognised political parties on January 5,2010. Since the report is a direct outcome of that meeting,we thought that it would be appropriate to first share the report with the eight recognised political parties,” the letter says.

Narayana had earlier dashed off a letter to Chidambaram requesting that the report be given in advance to political parties. “It is only at a meeting that I can share the report with all eight parties simultaneously. If I send the report to the eight political parties in advance,it is possible that one may receive it earlier and one may receive it later, leading to criticism,” Chidambaram stated in the letter. “We can discuss the future course of action later,” he added, requesting Narayana to attend the meeting.

After receiving the letter,Narayana said that he and the party’s floor leader in the Assembly and Bellampally MLA,Gunda Mallesh would represent the CPI in the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and BJP have said that they would stand by their decision not to attend the meeting. TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao who wrote a letter to Chidambaram expressing his reservations about the meeting is yet to receive a response. Both TRS and BJP decided to boycott the meeting fearing that if representatives — one each from Telangana and non-Telangana region — attend the meeting they would put forward contradictory positions of their respective parties.

On Tuesday, the TRS went one step further and criticised other parties for not boycotting the meeting. The TRS chief criticised PCC chief D Srinivas for deciding to send Andhra and Telangana leaders K Sambasiva Rao and Uttam Kumar Reddy to the eight-party meet.
