Faculty members of West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences on Wednesday appealed to the executive council of the premier law institute to strip retired Supreme Court judge A K Ganguly, who has been accused of sexual harassment,of the honorary professor status and dissociate itself from him completely.
In a statement through a blog post, the 12 faculty members said,Considering the nature of allegations, and the twin fact that the law intern was a student here while Ganguly an honorary professor at the time of incident,we feel that the latters continued association with our institution undermines the ideals of NUJS,an institution that has always strived to teach and foster all forms of justice, including gender.
We believe that the position of a professor is that of trust, and requires that such person be above reproach, especially above allegations of misbehaviour with students, particularly when such allegations have been found, prima facie,to have merit by a high-level committee. Given that the former judge continues to remain an honorary professor,we request the NUJS administration to take immediate steps to see to it that necessary action is initiated against the former judge, the statement read.
When contacted,Justice Ganguly, who has denied the allegations against him, said: I have no idea about such an appeal. I am associated with the university as a guest lecturer. I have not received any intimation from the university as of now.
In the statement, the faculty members also protested against the letter Justice Ganguly wrote to the CJI,in which he mentioned that he has been a victim of political conspiracy.
We also note with concern the unwarranted statements from several quarters attributing political motives to the interns blog posts and deposition. We are particularly appalled at the insinuation by the retired judge that the intern is a political pawn and strongly condemn this character assassination, the statement said. We also condemn all other statements that attempt to politicise the issue. Such statements are deeply disrespectful to her.
Prof Ruchira Goswami,NUJS spokesperson and a faculty member, said the members have put forward two demands. One is complete dissociation from Justice Ganguly until he is exonerated of all the charges. Secondly, the executive council should give priority to this process in the next meeting.
Since the university is closed now,we did not get any official correspondence. But we have spoken to Vice-Chancellor Prof Iswar Bhat who has agreed to our demand saying that the authority has already started the procedure, although the official notice will be issued following the council meeting, Prof Goswami said.
