Ending the mystery over the disappearance of N Mahalingam,the Kaiga Nuclear power plant scientist who went missing on June 8,naval divers recovered a body suspected to be his from the Kali river behind the plant.

Naval divers fished out the body from the river near the Kaiga township,the police said,adding that they were investigating whether there was foul play in his death. The Kaiga nuclear power plant authorities and his family members have confirmed that the body belonged to him,they added.

Authorities had sought the assistance of a five-member team of divers from Seabird,the Naval base at Karwar,to carry out the search operations. Intelligence officials along with CISF and local police had intensified the search operations to locate him and the navy divers were pressed into service after the search by the local divers proved futile, Karwar SP R Gupta said.

The 47-year-old scientist worked at the simulator training division of the nuclear power plant. He was reported missing by his wife V Sundari after he did not return from a morning walk on the power plant township’s 100-acre campus. Police had hinted at a possible accident and had raised the wild surroundings of the township as a possible factor in the disappearance.

NPCIL authorities had clarified that the scientist did not have any access to sensitive documents.
