NR Narayana Murthy at helm,Infosys back to being IT bellwether, say analysts

Experts, say that there has been a huge change in employee morale at Infosys after the change in leadership.

NR Narayana Murthy could not have wished for a better welcome than a good performance in the quarter that saw his return to Infosys in an executive role.

While the superior performance by the company in the quarter ended September 2013 has been driven by growth in volume and addition of new clients including five big clients during the quarter,NR Narayana Murthys presence has rejuvenated the company even though his steps may take some time to fructify.

NR Narayana Murthy, speaking at the Motilal Oswal Global Investor conference last month, had raised concerns over the falling growth rates from 26 per cent in 2010-11 to 5.8 per cent in 2012-13 and losing on operating margins. Employee cost,NR Narayana Murthy felt, has been putting pressure on the cost structure of the company as he noted that the compensation cost outside India for the company jumped from 36 per cent in March 2011 to 46 per cent in March 2013. For the quarter ended September, staff cost rose by 18.3 per cent to hit Rs 7,704 crore,up by 42 per cent over the same quarter last year. He signalled the path of going towards cost optimisation and stated the need to win large revenue yielding outsourcing projects.

While a period of one quarter may be too early to appraise NR Narayana Murthys impact on companys fortunes, experts closely watching the company, say that there has been a huge change in the morale of the companys employees.

Raamdeo Agrawal,co-founder of Motilal Oswal said that top officials at have privately admitted that there has been a big change in sentiment within the company with NR Narayana Murthys arrival.

The company is now bidding aggressively for projects and even its competitors are admitting that they have not seen such aggressiveness from Infosys in a long time, said Agrawal, adding that he would give one year to NR Narayana Murthy. While he Murthy has given himself three years for the turn around,I think by June next year he should show some visible change.

There are others who buy this argument. Steps announced by NR Narayana Murthy show the intent and will be good for the company going forward but we will have to see how they are executed, said a leading expert who did not wish to be named as he is a consultant with several IT companies. He also said that this quarters performance is one off and it needs to be seen if the company can sustain it over the next couple of quarters.
