The Navjivan Trust plans to approach the Union Culture Ministry in a bid to acquire the personal belongings of Mahatma Gandhi that were bought by liquor baron Vijay Mallya at an auction in New York on Thursday.
A trustee,Jitendra Desai, while reacting to the fact that Mahatma Gandhi was against the consumption of alcohol, said,Mallya has made good use of the revenue earned from his liquor company. Another member of the Trust and secretary of the Sabarmati Ashram and Gandhi Memorial Museum,Amrutbhai Modi, echoed Desais views.
Desai added that Mallya has taken the initiative in national interest, and hence,he will give the articles to the Government. After acquiring the articles from the Government, the Trust will give them to a museum,so that they are preserved for posterity,Desai said.
He added that in 2006,the Trust had moved the Madras High Court against the Christies auctioning of Gandhijis letters. The High Court granted us stay and we stopped the letters from being auctioned in London. The Government procured the letters and handed it over to the Trust,as it is the only heir to Gandhijis properties. We then handed over the letters to the Nehru Museum in Delhi, said Desai.
Amrutbhai,on the other hand, wants the Centre to frame a law regarding the belongings of prominent personalities like Mahatma Gandhi. According to him, there should be law making registration of such articles compulsory and banning the sale or auction of such properties.
