Soon after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called upon new-generation ministers of states to take the lead in making their ministries more IT efficient, the Department of Public Enterprise has decided that a comprehensive management information system would be designed to monitor the performance of all PSUs.

Also, their review meetings would now take place through video conferencing. This is likely to save time and money spent on traveling, the department argues.

We are planning to connect all chairmen and managing directors of PSUs through video conferencing. We are also designing a comprehensive MIS,with a dedicated portal for performance monitoring of PSUs, sources told The Indian Express. Sources said a large number of review meetings take place every week and many Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises (BRPSE) hearings are also conducted. With the move, the department plans to work in a more efficient way and intends to save the exchequers money.

At present, there is no structured performance monitoring system for PSUs. In the existing system, all indicators of their performance are not captured. The department plans to put in place a dedicated portal for regularly overseeing the performance of PSUs. This is expected to reduce the number of meetings dramatically.

Also, various memorandum of understandings are inked by PSUs with their parent department for setting yearly targets. This is a way of reviewing the progress made by them. However, with the new system it would be easy to generate MoUs automatically and compare them with the targets set earlier.

Earlier, the Prime Minister had held a meeting of all ministers of state for addressing their concerns regarding inadequate work allocation. He had assured them of taking up the issue with Cabinet ministers while asking them to focus on IT to make their ministries more efficient and organised.
