The Karnataka Government has decided to issue notices to Maytas Infrastructure Limited seeking an explanation on why key project contracts awarded to the company must not be terminated in the light of the financial fiasco at Satyam Computer Services Ltd - a company closely tied in with Maytas. Following a meeting this week the state infrastructure department has decided to question the capability of Maytas to execute the project in the light of the company's failure to achieve financial closure specifically with regard to regional airport projects at Gulbarga and BJP Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa's home constituency of Shimoga. Apart from the two airport projects,Maytas is also part of the consortium building a dedicated elevated expressway to the IT hub at Electronic City located approximately 20 km from Bangalore. The expressway project though behind its December 2008 schedule is in its final stages and expected to be completed this year. NHAI officials linked to the project said the Maytas affair had not affected the project that will be thrown open in April. Maytas is also contracted to build a depot for the Bangalore Metro project. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation officials say work is underwaray and see no possibilities for problems. The metro rail project scheduled for an 18-km first phase completion in 2011 is also running several months behind schedule.
