Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai on Wednesday flew down to the Maldives to hold discussions with key political leaders in the crisis-hit island nation and press for a broad-based political resolution.
Mathai is expected to meet former president Mohamed Nasheed,his successor Mohammed Waheed Hasan and other leaders.
This is the second visit by a senior Indian official to the Maldives in a week after Nasheed resigned on February 7.
Madhusudhan Ganapathi,secretary (west) in the Ministry of External Affairs,was sent by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as his special envoy last Friday to hold talks with key political stakeholders and impress upon them the need for a coalition government.
Mathai returns to New Delhi Thursday.
Nasheed rejects police summons
Male: A defiant Mohammad Nasheed has rejected police summons to record his statement on his controversial order to arrest a top judge when he was president,amid claims by his party that he still enjoyed Maldivians support as he was not a dictator like Muammar Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein. Nasheed,44,will not speak to the police, sources close to the ousted president said Wednesday.
Police had on Tuesday said that Nasheed was not cooperating with them. Meanwhile,Nasheed met a EU delegation here Wednesday and sought its support for his demand for early elections in the country. PTI
