Reiterating her anti-Congress stance,Mamata Banerjee Saturday said her Trinamool Congress “would stay in the alliance as long as it receives respect” from the Centre while in West Bengal her party is “strong enough” to go it alone in panchayat polls.

Addressing the Martyrs’ Day rally in Kolkata, the Bengal chief minister warned the Congress that the Trinamool would go it alone in the panchayat polls if “some leaders of the alliance partner do not refrain from carrying out anti-state government propaganda on CPM-backed TV channels”.

“Trinamool is strong enough to fight polls alone. We do not need anyone. They (Congress leaders) speak in such a manner as if we have come to power because of them. Actually, they are in power in Bengal because of us. The anti-Trinamool campaign of some leaders in the CPM’s channels will not be tolerated from now. We want to continue the alliance but not at the cost of our honor,” Mamata said. She also instructed her cadre to prepare for the panchayat poll, scheduled for 2013,“right now”.

She came down heavily on the UPA government at the Centre. “Till last year,we fought against CPM’s terror. Now we are fighting against the Centre’s neglect. But we will not bow our head. We have visited Delhi 50 times but our efforts have so far proved futile,” she said.

“We have been demanding moratorium for many months for justified reasons since it is the Centre that had allowed the Left Front to go for unlimited borrowing that led to accumulation of Rs 2.09 lakh crore debt on the present government. Why was the permission to take such huge loan given? We have 28 members in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. If our demand is not fulfilled,we would snatch our right. We know how to do it. If required,a people’s march to Delhi will be organised,” Mamata said.

She,however, said her party would like to stay in the alliance at the Centre. “We are in the alliance and we will be in the alliance as long as proper and due honor is given to Trinamool.”

Mamata warned party workers not to compromise the party’s ethics. “Remember one thing,I am a rough and tough person,” she warned.

Mamata alleged that zila parishads and panchayats, most of which are controlled by the CPM,are a stumbling block to development. “In every stage, they are opposing the government,” she said.

She also claimed that she was working in the administration with “CPM cadres” who were always looking for a chance to “sabotage”.

She praised her own government for bringing down the prices of commodities.
