Larry Crowne is a story about a middle-aged man (Tom Hanks) who loses his job due to recession and his struggle to put his career on track by rejoining his college. Until he was downsized,affable,amiable Larry was a role model for many at a big-box company where he worked as a team leader since his time in the Navy.

Unclear about how to pay back his mortgage and what to do with his free time,Larry heads to his local college to start all over again. There he becomes part of a community of outcasts. In his public-speaking class,Larry develops a crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Julia Roberts),who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband,Dean (Bryan Cranston).
