Amid reports that the US is planning to deploy more troops in Afghanistan,a top US senator on Sunday said it would be “entirely irresponsible” for President Barack Obama to raise the troop levels as the government there remains in turmoil over the recent elections.

“It would be entirely irresponsible for the President of the United States to commit more troops to this country (Afghanistan),when we don’t even have an election finished and know who the president is and what kind of government we’re working in,with,” Democratic Senator John Kerry told CNN in an interview. The US should not proceed with a new strategy for Afghanistan committing a major increase in US resources, including more troops, without securing a clear partner in Kabul,he said in the interview to be aired on Sunday night.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s government has been plagued by uncertainty after allegations of widespread fraud in the August elections.
