Defending the surveillance programme exposed by Edward Snowden,US Secretary of State John Kerry Monday took potshots at Russia and China by calling them powerful bastions of internet freedom.
I suppose there is no small irony here8230; I wonder if while he was in either of those countries,he raised the question of Internet freedom since that seems to be what he champions, Kerry said.
We dont know, specifically, where he may head,or what his intended destination may be, Kerry said.
When asked about whether the Snowden incident would affect the US relationship with China or Russia,he said,It would be deeply troubling, obviously,if they had adequate notice, and notwithstanding that, they make the decision wilfully to ignore that and not live by the standards of the law,.
In the past two years, the US has transferred seven prisoners to Russia that Moscow wanted,he said. I think reciprocity and the enforcement of the law is pretty important, Kerry said.
Khurshid,on his part, said,This is an area we are both interested in and we discussed it8230;I think its important to keep this distinction in mind. Access to contents of communication and to be able to study by way of computer software, patterns of communication.
Kerry concurred and said this law does not look at content of e-mails,conversation on telephone calls, but does a random survey of numbers, not even names.
