Jharkhands ninth Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Sunday expanded his cabinet for the first time after being sworn in last month.
Six ministers were sworn in by Governor Syed Ahmed with JMM contributing four, and Congress and RJD one each. Hemant had taken oath of office along with Rajendra Prasad and Annapurna Devi,Congress and RJD legislature party leaders, respectively. The Jharkhand cabinet can have 12 members.
Haji Hussain Ansari,Jai Prakash Bhai Patel,Simon Marandi and Champai Soren of the JMM were made ministers along with Geetashree Oraon of the Congress and Suresh Paswan of the RJD. The Congress was unable to finalise three more names, with two representatives of single-legislator parties,Bandhu Tirkey and Chamra Linda, reportedly getting ministerial berths. There was unhappiness in some factions of the JMM about selection of Patel, the winner of a 2011 bye election after the death of his father Tel Lal Mahto,a senior JMM leader. Mathura Prasad Mahto and Hemlal Murmu were the disgruntled leaders. However, sources close to CM Hemant were quick to point out that Patel is Mahtos son-in-law. The former is reportedly a Hemant pick, the ostensible reason being his youth.
