Italian PM calls up Manmohan

Two Indian fishermen were killed when the Italian Navy personnel on board an Italian ship opened fire.

A day after the Italian government summoned the Indian envoy in Rome over the arrest of Italian Navy personnel,Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti today called up Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Both agreed that the issues should be resolved “amicably” in accordance with law.

According to a PMO statement,Monti condoled the deaths of the two fishermen and expressed regret over the incident. “The two leaders reaffirmed the importance of deepening relations between India and Italy and agreed that the issues that had arisen following the incident should be resolved amicably in accordance with law and in the spirit of friendship that characterises relations between the two countries,” it said.

Earlier in the day,officials had reiterated that the country’s laws were applicable in the incident and they would abide by the outcome of the legal process in Kerala.

HC relief for Sanjay Gupta

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to filmmaker Sanjay Gupta,accused of cheating and forgery for promotion of his flick “Shootout at Wadala”,observing that the police showed “over enthusiasm” in registering the case.

“It is an innovative invitation. Have you (police) lost your sense of humour? The accused have not issued the invitation with an intention to cause loss or cheat someone,” Justice A V Nirgude said.

Sanjay Gupta,Balaji Motion Pictures (Producer) and Glamsham.com (Bollywood movie portal) were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for forging the letterhead of the city Police Commissioner in the media invites sent out by them for a press conference last week. Gupta had approached the High Court after the sessions court rejected his anticipatory bail on March 5.
