India should be ashamed of graft: Basu

Common man's struggle to deal with corruption and bureaucracy is 'infuriating': Kaushik Basu

An ordinary man is facing “a mountain of bureaucracy and demands for bribes” in the country,Chief Economic Adviser Kaushik Basu said today.

Addressing a seminar here,Basu said that corruption was something that India should be “ashamed of” and ordinary people’s struggle to deal with bureaucracy and administration is “infuriating”.

“… India needs governance reforms and corruption control,” he said.

He said that nothing is as “infuriating as stories of corruption and the struggle a common man faces everyday in interaction with bureaucracy and with the administration”.

“For ordinary people it is very very discouraging when you face a mountain of bureaucracy and the demand for bribes to be paid for these kind of things to be got to be done,” he said.

“I personally feel that for a country that is on the verge of taking its seat at the global high-table,it is something we should be ashamed of….”,he added.
