On the eve of Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat and a day after Chief Minister Narendra Modi publicly said that the Supreme Court order for a probe into his alleged role in the 2002 riots followed a Congress bid to put me behind bars, the state BJP front-paged advertisements in local dailies, appealing to voters to turn out in large numbers tomorrow to give a protective cover to Modi and foil the dangerous Congress game of sending him to jail.
The Gujarat BJP advertisement said that by targeting Modi, the Congress wanted to free the Italian middleman, arrest the son of Gujarat, make terrorist Afzal a guest and insult Gujarats pride.
The appeal for a huge voter turnout came a day after Modi told a rally in Anand: Once again, the Supreme Court has remembered me. What should I do,you tell me… Fifteen days ago,Kapil Sibal,a Congress leader and minister in the UPA government and a senior advocate, said Modi should be prepared to go to jail. And exactly after 15 days, the Supreme Court tightened the noose on me. What does it mean? Has the Congress party conspired against me? This is the question that comes to my mind…
Whether the Congress likes or dislikes me,I am the son of the soil. The Congress is trying its best to put me behind bars. On the other hand,Bofors case accused and Soniabens family friend Quattrocchi has been released by the CBI, Modi said, referring to the withdrawal of the Red Corner Notice against Quattrocchi.
After the Congress lodged a complaint, the state Election Commission said it would ask the District Collectors concerned to report on both the Modi speech and the BJP advertisement.
BJP spokesperson Vijay Rupani conceded that his party was
seeking votes to keep Modi out of jail since the Congress wants him behind bars.
