ICICI Lombard to provide crop cover in 8 states,39 districts

Private general insurer ICICI Lombard will provide cover for weather-based crops to farmers in 8 states,including Madhya Pradesh,Bihar and Tamil Nadu,covering 39 districts in these states.

Private general insurer ICICI Lombard will insurance provide cover for weather-based crops to farmers in 8 states,including Madhya Pradesh,Bihar and Tamil Nadu,covering 39 districts in these states.

“ICICI Lombard General Insurance… has been given the mandate to provide weather based crop insurance for Rabi season (2010-11) in Madhya Pradesh,Bihar,Tamil Nadu,Karnataka,West Bengal,Chattisgarh,Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh,” ICICI Lombard said in a statement.

It would cover 39 districts – 30 loanee districts,farmers who have taken loans,and exclusive 9 non-loanee districts.

Weather based crop insurance provides cover against weather-related risks faced by crops such as excess or deficit rainfall,variations in temperature and fluctuations in humidity.

The major crops that ICICI Lombard would cover for Rabi season (2010-11) are winter paddy,cotton,wheat,mustard,barley,maize,onion,potato,tomato,lentil,peas,arhar,jowar,among others.

In 2009-10,ICICI Lombard insured over 2,87,000 farmers under weather-based crops scheme.
