Barely five days after he cleared Chandan Yadav as new Bihar Youth Congress president,Rahul Gandhi,AICC General Secretary in charge of the Indian Youth Congress, fired him shortly before he was to take charge in Patna today, its reliably learnt.
The order from Gandhis office came when Yadav was leading a celebratory procession to Sadakat Ashram, the partys office in Patna. The reason: Yadav, who was IYC general secretary, violated the age limit criterion of 35 years.
In fact, today Rahul made a fervent appeal at the CWC to give opportunities to the youth. He said the party should give at least 30 per cent of the difficult seats to young faces. Rahul Gandhis confidence is based on the fact that of the over 30 IYC leaders fielded in the recent Assembly elections in five states,a majority won.
The Bihar case, therefore, came as a betrayal of his trust, said IYC sources. There were two sets of documents about Yadavs age one indicating he was below 35 and another to the contrary. The verification carried out by the AICC General Secretary went by the second set of documents, said sources.
IYC President Ashok Tanwar, closely associated with Yadav and the appointing authority, will also have some explaining to do. Despite repeated attempts to contact Tanwar and Yadav, they were not available for comment.
After taking charge in September 2007,Rahul had removed a host of office-bearers who were occupying posts years after crossing the age limit. Many state Youth Congress Presidents had even crossed 40 when he took charge.
