Govt reviewing export-oriented sectors: DGFT

The Govt is assessing the needs of major export-oriented sectors hit by the slowdown.

The Government is assessing the needs of major export-oriented sectors hit by the economic slowdown to provide support for their fast recovery,Director General of Foreign Trade R S Gujral said.

8220;We are carrying out sectoral review of different sectors to find out their need for any further support to be provided by the government so as to facilitate their speedy recovery,8221; Gujral told reporters here at the PHD Chamber8217;s meet.

Stating that the report of sectoral review was expected to be submitted within a week,Gujral said on the basis of the report,the government would take a call on providing further support,which might be financial as well,to the industry.

Gujral said that he had met majority of the representatives of 34 export promotion councils to seek their views for assessing requirements.

Noting that sectors like engineering goods,readymade garments,gems and jewellery had although,witnessed arrest in export decline,Gujral said yet it was still an area of concern for the government.

8220;Though decline in export has come down,some sectors are still distressed 8230; and unless the demand for their products in exports markets like the US,Europe improves,you cannot achieve growth,8221; he asserted.
