Govt asks agencies to give monthly phone-tap reports

Directors General of Police of states and Delhi Commissioner of Police can also tap phones but only in their service areas.

To stop the misuse of phone-tapping powers,the government has asked all central law-enforcement agencies to submit a monthly report on information gathered from intercepted calls,Minister of State for Home R P N Singh told Lok Sabha Tuesday. He was replying to a written question.

The Intelligence Bureau,Narcotics Control Bureau,Directorate of Enforcement,Central Board of Direct Taxes,Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and the CBI are the central agencies that can tap phones.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA),Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW),Directorate of Signal Intelligence and Ministry of Defence also have the power but for Jammu and Kashmir,North East and Assam alone.

The Directors General of Police of states and the Delhi Commissioner of Police can also tap phones but only in their service areas.

The central agencies need authorisation from the Union Home Secretary for such interceptions,while state agencies have to take permission from the state home secretaries.
