Gang accused of killing CPM rebel found using internet, phones in jail

The state intelligence had found the gang using phones in jail and frequently updating photos of jail life and liking CPM events.

The state government ordered a probe Monday into the use of internet, including Facebook,by a gang of seven contract killers that has been in judicial custody in Kozhikode district jail for the past 17 months for allegedly killing CPM rebel T P Chandrasekharan in May last year.

A high-level committee comprising the prisons and law and order DGPs and the Home Secretary will probe the matter.

The state intelligence had found the gang using phones in jail and frequently updating photos of jail life and liking CPM events, including the party plenum last week,on Facebook. One of the members,Annan Sijith, posted a warning on FB 15 hours ago against “playing” with the CPM. The photo updates show the gang members using expensive smartphones.

Congress leaders slammed the security lapses in the jail. The party’s Kannur MP K Sudhakaran, who has a running feud with Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan over the government’s police policy, said the incident exposed the failure of the Home Department. “Radhakrishnan should answer for this blatant violation of prison rules. It is shocking that CPM goons have such freedom to violate prison rules when the Congress is in power,” he said.

Radhakrishnan said he would visit the jail on Tuesday.
