Believe it or not,the Lucknow-based Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj (CSM) Medical University in Uttar Pradesh has many students who have failed to clear their exams for more than 10 years. At least two of them have been around for 25 years.
Because the Medical Council of India is silent on the maximum number of attempts, many students have been appearing for examinations for a very long time, but still continue to fail, said Dr JV Singh,Dean of Students Welfare,CSMMU.
Some students are of the 1985-86 batch and have not yet managed to pass their final examinations, he said.
Two students from the 1985-86 batch have been granted permission to take the final examinations this year.
Twelve more students of different batches, including two girls, have been studying for over 11 years and are taking the final examinations this year, said Dr Singh. There are multiple reasons why these students fail time and again, starting from their extremely poor economic conditions to their non-seriousness.
Students appearing for supplementary examinations accumulate in two stages, explained Dr Singh. The first group consists of those students who do not clear the first examination conducted after one year of admission. Students who fail the first professionals are not allowed to study further unless they clear four papers of the first exams.
A student takes the second professional at the end of two years and mini-professional at the end of three-and-a-half-years from admission. Finally,at the end of four-and-a-half years,a student gives the final professional examination.
Even if a student fails the second and mini-professionals,he is allowed to attend classes and keep taking the supplementary examination for papers he has flunked.
Interestingly though, said Dr Singh, premier institutes such as AIIMS,and even CSMMU for that matter, are not bound to follow MCI recommendations on all issues.
That is why we will implement our varsitys rules from this session onwards, according to which students cannot write examinations more than six times, he said.
The varsity will apply this rule only for those students who have not been able to clear their first professionals.
There are eight such students from batches between 2002 and 2007,who will get a final chance. The admission of students who have exhausted all six chances will be cancelled, said the dean.
