First action in fund misuse,AMU’s finance officer suspended

The CBI had probed into the matter on the request of Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry. Sources said the role of former registrar V K Abdul Jaleel and Beg was also probed. The two were interrogated in the case.

Sources said the university executive council has also decided to recover around Rs seven lakh from Azis and Rs 54,000 from the former registrar in lieu of the financial irregularities.

“The action has been taken on the directives of Union Human Resource Development Ministry that had requested for the CBI inquiry into the matter in 2011,” said an university official.

AMU Registrar,Group Captain (Retd.) Shahrukh Shamshad,through an office memo,has said Beg’s suspension is a result of disciplinary proceedings against her contemplated in accordance with the provisions of Central Civil Services Rules.

Shamshad could not be reached for comment.

University spokesperson Rahat Abrar confirmed that action against the finance officer is in connection with the case of financial irregularities that was probed by CBI.

Abrar said during the period of suspension,Beg cannot leave Aligarh without the Vice Chancellor’s permission. Beg’s deputy,Masood-ur-Rehman,will look after the charge of finance officer till further orders.

AMU Vice-Chancellor Lt General (Retd) Zameer Uddin Shah,under the authorization of the Executive Council,has ordered that a subsistence allowance be paid to Beg,as per university rules,during the period of suspension.

Azis was AMU V-C from June 2007 to January 2012. Some members of AMU executive council had lodged a complaint with the then President of India (Visitor to the university) alleging financial irregularities by the V-C.

The HRD Ministry in 2009 had appointed a two-member committee to hold a full Visitor inquiry into the “affairs of the AMU” with specific allegations against the V-C,registrar and certain other authorities involved in alleged irregularity. That committee was dissolved and the ministry later set up another panel in February 2010 that has not come to any definite conclusion in its report. The CBI inquiry was furher ordered in the matter in 2011.
