Dell India’s efforts to make the planet earth a greener abode are enumerated in the following highlights!
1. Recycling Discount Coupon – To encourage PC recycling among its consumers,consumers in India who send their old systems to Dell for free recycling will be eligible for special discount coupons toward the purchase of their next Dell system. This coupon,offering a discount of Rs. 1000,may be used toward the purchase of any Dell system purchased directly from Dell for any of its product lines. Available globally,Dell has now extended its free recycling program for consumers in India to accept computers from any vendor.
2. Dell Go Green Challenge Dell launched the Dell Go Green Challenge in an effort to raise awareness and community involvement in green initiatives in India. The challenge invited users to share photographs,videos and other innovative depictions of key issues,concerns or thoughts on green technology at http://www.dellgogreen.com . The contest ran for two months,during which the community voted for their favourite entries. Additionally,the forum is offering a platform for the green enthusiasts to gather in the virtual space and share ideas,thoughts and visions on the issue. The 20 entries receiving the most votes from the community will be recognized online and through small gifts while a panel of judges,selected for their longstanding commitment to environmental concerns,will decide the three winning entries.
3. To help tackle the e-waste challenge,Dell was the first major computer manufacturer to ban the export of non-working electronics to developing countries.
4. Dell packages its netbooks,its new five-inch Streak tablet and about half of its Inspiron laptops in cushions made from responsibly sourced bamboo .
5. Dell was the first tech company to offer compostable packaging,making disposal of computer packaging easy and environmentally responsible.
6. Most of the desktop,workstation and portable products designed by Dell consume less than 5 watts in a low-power mode,exceeding current levels set by the EPA for energy efficiency.
7. Dell has committed to eliminate PVC and brominated flame retardants from all newly shipping products by the end of 2011 and already ships several PVC/BFR-free and -reduced products. Its EPEAT Gold-certified G-series LED monitors,for example,are free of PVC,BFR,arsenic and mercury,and feature an external chassis made with more than 25 percent recycled materials.
8. Dell powers eight of its facilities worldwide using 100% renewable energy.
9. Dell sources 25 percent of its global electricity needs from renewable sources. In the US,its around 35 percent,putting Dell at No. 5 on EPAs Green Power Partnership ranking.
10. Dells new Casablanca,Morocco facility (opening June 7) will feature solar structures on the roof that will heat up to 1,320 liters of water each day for Dells kitchen and fitness center,significantly reducing the facilities energy consumption.
II. Packaging: Building a Greener Future with Bamboo: Dell uses bamboo for the product cushions cradling Dell Inspiron Mini Netbooks and Dell Inspiron Notebooks line,inside an outer box made from 25 percent post-consumer materials.
Dell plans to expand the use of bamboo packaging to more products this year.
This plant used for fishing rods,fences,rocking chairs,baskets and bowls is now useful for redefining product packaging.
