Cong is polarising society, more Hindus killed in encounters: BJP

A day after Narendra Modi asserted that he was a Hindu nationalist and drew a parallel between the 2002 Gujarat riots

A day after Narendra Modi asserted that he was a Hindu nationalist and drew a parallel between the 2002 Gujarat riots and a car accident killing a puppy, the BJP Saturday alleged the Congress was polarising society in the run up to 2014 election.

“The government has chosen to polarise the polity. A false propaganda machinery is at work. A movement is being built around as if people of the minority community are being victimised in this country,as if they only get killed in encounters,” BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi said. This, she claimed, was being done because the UPA government had failed to perform.

Lekhi cited National Human Rights Commission figures to substantiate her claim that fewer Muslims have been killed in fake encounters than Hindus.

“In their greed for power, some Congressmen are misquoting facts pertaining to encounters. NHRC data suggests that out of 1,262 complaints of fake encounters since 1993,most were regarding Hindus. In only 203 cases,Muslims were alleged to have been killed,” Lekhi said.

She rejected the notion that Muslims were being targeted and alleged a “selective targeting of non-Muslim communities” during the UPA rule. “A false perception is sought to be created that Muslims are being targeted in false cases by this rogue regime. But then far worse false cases are pending against innocent Hindus. Even chargesheets have not been filed in some cases and thus they continue to be under illegal detention. In the Northeast, several Christians have been subject to illegal detention by the Congress. The BJP objects to any attempt to discriminate among Sikhs,Hindus and Christians in terror cases and let them languish in jails, thereby selectively targeting non-Muslim communities,” Lekhi said.

Citing media reports, she alleged that Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan’s proposal to set up a special task force to oversee terror cases against Muslims was a reflection of the ruling Congress’s “ongoing strategy to polarise India” in the run up to the election.

Lekhi alleged that the “false sense of insecurity” created by the Congress has thwarted attempts to mainstream Muslims.

“The Congress, along with a coalition of corrupt parties, has sought to create a false sense of insecurity amongst minorities and thereby hampered mainstreaming of all citizens,” she said. “The false propaganda machinery of the Congress has outlived its utility and time has come for Indian citizens to fix accountability on the issue of scams and ill-governance.”
