Rejecting the opposition BJPs demand for resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram, the ruling Congress on Friday asked the BJP to accept the responsibility of the first-come-first-serve policy of granting telecom licences that was invented by the NDA regime.
We accept the fact that today the first-come-first-serve policy has been condemned8230;. This government must accept responsibility and we do accept responsibility for the errors of it. When I am accepting responsibility, the BJP should also accept responsibility for inventing and operating the policy in the first place, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters. He slammed the BJP for politicising and sensationalising the Supreme Court order cancelling 122 licences issued under the policy for its narrow political gains.
Singhvi rejected the opposition demand for resignation of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister asserting that the Supreme Court had not held the Prime Minister responsible directly or indirectly and did not hold the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram responsible either.
There was no SC judgment holding the first-come-first-serve policy as bad in concept till yesterday. You cannot be penalised and punished for continuing a policy, Singhvi said.
He deplored the BJPs attack on the Prime Minister after the apex court found fault with the Prime Ministers Office for delay in sanctioning the prosecution for the then telecom Minister A Raja.
We deprecate in strongest possible terms the repeated attempts of the BJP and other opposition parties to politicise and sensationalise legal judgments8230;. It is utterly irresponsible and unconstitutional to link judgments with totally unconnected political issues, Singhvi said.
