The Bengal government has asked the CID to investigate the death of a 16-year-old boy who was killed by goons when he tried to prevent them from molesting his elder sister at Barasat in North 24 Parganas on Tuesday.

The government has also asked the district magistrate and the superintendent of police of North 24 Parganas to explain why the police and the administration reacted so late to the victim’s cries for help.

A team led by Annuj Sharma,Special IG,CID,on Wednesday visited the family members of the victim. The incident allegedly happened near the bungalows of the DM and the ASP.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee also visited the residence of Rajib Das,the 16-year-old victim.

Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh said: “We have asked for a report from the district administration and police. We will see if one of the family members can be given a job.”

Nityagopal Karmakar,a guard posted at the ASP’s bungalow,was suspended before the Chief Minister reached the spot.

According to sources,Bhattacharjee was told by the district administration that action had been taken in the case. Three persons were also detained in connection with the murder.

The victim’s family alleged that Rinku Das,the elder sister of Rajib Das,had pleaded with the security guards of the DM’s bungalow for help.

District Magistrate Binod Kumar,however,said Rinku had asked a security guard at the ASP’s bungalow to help her. The guard allegedly did not come out of the compound.

“The incident is unfortunate. We have inquired into the matter and it has been found that the girl begged for help before a security guard at the ASP’s bungalow. The guard has been suspended,” said Binod Kumar.

As Bhattacharjee went to meet the family members,locals blocked his path and asked him to go back. The locals also gheraoed TMC leaders Kakali Ghosh Dastidar and Sougato Roy who went to visit the family.

According to the family,the CM asked them to visit the state secretariat on Tuesday.

State Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta said: “We have decided to give Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the family of the victim.”

With Assembly elections round the corner,the incident assumed a political colour with the Opposition Trinamool and the Congress demanding the CM’s resignation.

Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee is expected to visit Barasat as soon as she reaches Kolkata. The party has decided to plan a series of agitations over the incident.
