As part of its effort to crack down on tax defaulters, the government has proposed to increase the staff strength of the Income Tax department by 20,000 more people.

The proposal is expected to be submitted for Cabinets approval Thursday and, among other things, aims to create 1,349 new Indian Revenue Service posts and add 1,940 non-IRS officer posts to the department.

The government believes the expansion, estimated to cost Rs 450 crore, would make the department more efficient and increase tax collection by more than Rs 25,000 crore.

The Cabinet, meanwhile,is also expected to discuss a Department of Personnel and Training status report on vacancies in central government jobs reserved for SCs,STs and OBCs.
