Cabinet Secy rules out govt meddling

Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrashekhar has asserted that the multi-agency probe into the conduct of the Commonwealth Games.

Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrashekhar has asserted that the multi-agency probe into the conduct of the Commonwealth Games will take its own course, without governmental coordination or interference.

“We have delivered a good Games and the process of investigations has begun by independent agencies,” he told The Indian Express. “If anyone or any department, including the Organising Committee, have committed mistakes, they have to answer for it.”

Since former Comptroller and Auditor General V K Shunglu was still out of the country, the terms of reference and precise role of the inquiry committee under him were still undecided,Chandrashekhar added. “We would like to decide everything in consultation with him,but generally,we would like the committee to examine the overall conduct of the Games so that it will be a lesson for the future.”

He added that among the different departments and agencies,it is the CAG which will focus on the financial aspect and submit its findings to Parliament within three months. “I do not think there will be any overlap since agencies like the CBI,Central Vigilance Commission and Enforcement Directorate have specific mandates. They will coordinate CWG-related actions among themselves. They do not need any directions from the government,” he said.

If any criminal culpability or deficiencies were found in the supply of overlays, those too would be immediately investigated,he added.
