Mumbai: Vivek Kulkarni,an ex-IAS officer,has stepped down from the Board of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and is believed to have cited lack of corporate governance as a reason for his resignation. Sources in the know said Kulkarni resigned about two months ago. They,however,did not disclose the reasons for his resignation. According to sources,Kulkarni is believed to have objected to the exchange’s proposal to buy Computer Age Management Services,a mutual funds registrar and transfer agent.

Kerala opens ports to private investment

I-T dept strikes Rs 50 crore deal with BSNL

New Delhi: The Income Tax department has struck an estimated Rs 50 crore deal with state-owned telecom

company BSNL to provide 51,000 mobile connections and one thousand high-end Blackberry phones for secure and fast communication amongst its officers and staff. The department’s new telecom kitty,formulated to help I-T officials to enhance their speed of communication for official work,has a heavy shopping list with the joint network of BSNL and MTNL. This provides for supply of 51,000 mobile connections,22,000 landline connections,8,000 3G datacards with 5GB download per month,1,000 Blackberry phones,5,000 broad bandconnections and unlimited free SMS facility to the entire network of BSNL/MTNL.

Rural poor to get Rs 1,400 sop for LPG

Mumbai: Oil minister Murli Deora on Friday said the government would offer Rs 1,400 subsidy per LPG connection to BPL families in rural areas as part of its effort to increase the reach of cooking fuel among the poor. “The proposed subsidy will be available to the new connections being offered under the Rajiv Gandhi Rural LPG Distribution Scheme,” Deora told reporters here.

UBL gets shareholders nod for merging firms

New Delhi: In a move to consolidate its businesses,United Breweries Ltd (UBL) on Friday said three of its

group firms will be merged into itself in order to have better synergies and enabling cost savings. The proposal to merge Associated Breweries and Distilleries Ltd (ABDL),Millennium Alcobev Pvt Ltd (MAPL) and Empee Breweries Ltd (EBL) has been approved by shareholdersas well as secured and unsecured creditors of the company,UBL said.
