PHNOM PENH: A UN-backed tribunal sentenced the Khmer Rouges chief jailer to 35 years for overseeing the deaths of up to 16,000 people the first verdict involving a senior member of the killing fields regime that devastated a generation of Cambodians between 1975 and 1979. Kaing Guek Eav also known as Duch will actually serve only 19 years after being convicted of war crimes after taking into account time already served.

Indian ship to join flotilla to Gaza

JERUSALEM: An Indian vessel is set to join a new international campaign named The Audacity of Hope to press for an end to the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. An e-mail circulated by pro-Palestinian activists in the US said an Indian ship will join a flotilla of other vessels from Europe,Canada,South Africa and West Asia in early autumn,the Haaretz daily reported.

Mexico: Guards gave inmates guns to kill

MEXICO CITY: The director of the prison in Gomez Palacio in Durango state and three others were placed under a form of house arrest after it was allegedly found that they let inmates out and lent them guns to carry out drug-related killings,including the massacre of 17 people last week,prosecutors said Sunday. The inmates would then return to their cells,the Attorney Generals Office said.

Naomi to testify on Aug 5 over blood diamond

WASHINGTON: Supermodel Naomi Campbells request to postpone her testimony in a war crimes trial was approved Monday. She will now testify on August 5 instead of July 29. Campbell was summoned by War Crimes Court after reports that she was gifted a blood diamond by former Liberian President Charles Taylor in 1997.
