Clashes kill more than 100 in Nigeria
JOS: Nigerias Acting President on Sunday ordered security forces to hunt down those behind clashes involving Muslim herders and Christian villagers which killed more than 100 people in the centre of the country. The latest unrest in Nigerias volatile Plateau state comes at a difficult time,with acting leader Goodluck Jonathan trying to assert his authority while countrys ailing leader Umaru YarAdua remains too sick to govern.
Barred from using phone,Fonseka fasts
COLOMBO: Former Sri Lankan army chief Sarath Fonseka facing detention under treason charges,now at a naval facility on Sunday went on a hunger strike for not being allowed to speak to his daughters on telephone who are overseas. Fonsekas wife Anoma said her husband had been denied the right to speak to his daughters and therefore he would fast.
Monument at LTTE heads death site
COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan Army is erecting a monument where LTTE chief V Prabhakaran was killed near the Nandikadal lagoon in Mullaittivu district to depict its final victory over the Tamil Tigers last year. A monument to mark the spot where LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran fell is being erected by the security forces, the Sunday Times reported.
Iran begins cruise missile production
TEHRAN: Iran announced on Sunday that it has started a new production line of highly accurate,short range cruise missiles,which would add a new element to the countrys already imposing arsenal. Gen Ahmad Vahidi told Iranian state TV that the cruise missile,called Nasr 1,would be capable of destroying targets up to 3,000 tonnes in size.
15 Oxford students suspended
LONDON: Fifteen students of Oxford University have been suspended for sending sexist emails grading and assessing female undergraduate students,and drawing up a secret list of fitties. The male students of Hertford College were suspended after the private emails were posted around the college by a whistle blower. The list included pictures of targets the students planned to lure to a party,while the emails included derogatory comments.
Ex-UN official gets jail for child porn
NEW YORK: A former UN official Jose Ortega-Osona,42, has received 2-1/2 years in prison for possessing thousands of child pornography pictures and over hundred tapes. One picture described as horrific by the judge was of a two-year-old child being subjected to genital mutilation. The Spaniard,who joined the UNs Fertility and Planning Section in 2006,was fined 12,500.
