Bihar seeks nod to punish IPS officers

PATNA: The Bihar government has sought the approval of the Centre to take action against five IPS officers for “adverse departmental inquiry report and dereliction of duty”. The Centre’s approval is required under the provisions of All India Services rules. Police headquarters sources said the five IPS officers in question had faced departmental inquiries for insubordination and alleged financial bungling in recruitment of constables. Earlier,the state government had ordered departmental inquiry against 15 IPS officers,including an officer of DGP rank and an IG.

Italian marines sent to 14 days custody

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A court in Kollam Monday sent the two Italian marines accused of killing two fishermen in last month’s mid-sea firing,to 14-days judicial custody. They were produced before the court after the police custody ended on Monday. The court also allowed a representative of the Italian government to visit the marines for an hour in a day at the central prison in Thiruvanathapuram.

Kerala MP protests inter-linking of rivers

NEW DELHI: Alarmed by Supreme Court’s recent direction to Centre to set up a panel to expedite the inter-linking of rivers,Kodikunnil Suresh,a Congress MP from Kerala,has written to Prime Minister requesting the government to not take up Pampa-Achencovil-Vaipar river linking project. The National Water Development Agency had envisaged transferring surplus water from Pampa and Achencovil rivers in Kerala to Vaipar basin in Tamil Nadu. Suresh expressed apprehension that the proposed project would result into an ecological disaster and will adversely impact paddy crops.
